RESONANCE:  Super Villan Character, Suit, & Action Figure Design

MATERIALS: Clay, Thermochromic Paint, Airbrush, Nickel/galvanized Wire, Battery Holder and Clips.  DIMENSIONS: 2" D X 12" H x 4.75" W

Resonance is  a collaborative project completed with an interior designer, Gerard Toledo, and a digital designer, Mateusz M.  Given the location, Governor’s Island we developed the character from the backstory and psychoanalysis to the super suit and products.  Individually I was in charge of designing the hypothetical suit, with embedded nanotechnology, as well as a prototype of the action figure.
I began with precedent studies as a foundation for the design approach that I wanted to carry out for the suit design.  I looked into specific design aesthetics including “Cyber Punk,” “Steam Punk,” and very higher end fashion that comes straight out of the runway.
When it came to the technology and the action that resonance would be performing, I thought that just embedding a speaker into an action figure would be highly expected, so I took it to the next level.  Experimenting and learning from Cymatics, I wanted to visually represent when Resonance activates her carbon nanotube speakers, powered by a biofuel cell, similar to that of a cuttlefish that express deimatic behavior to ward off its enemies. As for the action figure, adding thermochromic paint on top of a nickel wire that when activated allowed me to produce a current that would activate the pigments to reveal the pattern.
